A female of one of the smallest deer in the world – the southern pudding, which was born in the Warsaw Zoo, already has a name. Selected in an online vote.
Praline was born on July 16. It will not grow too large, because the southern pudu reaches about 40 centimeters at the withers. Young pudu is Eva and Pitchu's daughter. The capital's zoo announced a plebiscite on the baby's name. This year, all animals born in the Warsaw Zoo are given names starting with the letter P. Internet users chose the name from among many suggestions. Praline – won over 70 percent votes.
“The plebiscite for the name of the female dog extended far beyond the borders of our country. We received many name suggestions from all over the world. Pralineka became known, among others, in the United States, India, Greece, Germany and Japan. It is safe to say that the baby was an absolute sensation.” – the zoo wrote on social media.
He also invited people to observe the Pralinka, although – as he emphasized – the pudu is a rather shy species and sometimes requires a lot of patience in observation.
It occurs in South America
The southern pudu is a small mammal of the deer family found in South America. It is only slightly larger than its cousin, the northern poodle, making it the second smallest cervid in the world. The southern poodle population continues to decline due to habitat loss. This species is currently listed in the Near Threatened category.
Adult males weigh less than 15 kilograms and are only 30-40 centimeters at the withers, females are one kilogram lighter. These animals have relatively long fur consisting of characteristic, hollow hairs. The color varies seasonally – from reddish cinnamon in the warm season to dark brown in the winter. Juveniles, like many other deer, have light spots on the sides of their bodies. Males have short (approx. 7 cm), sharp, unsplit antlers, which they shed in July.
The exact range of the southern poodle is quite difficult to determine because this mammal is very timid and rarely seen.
The southern pudu is a herbivore. It searches for highly nutritious plant parts in forests – it eats leaves, buds and fruits from the branches of shrubs.
