According to analysts, the ongoing elections are not only a matter of selecting parliamentarians, but above all an indication direction of the country's development, among others on matters of international cooperation. For many months, the president of Georgia, Salome Zourabishvili, who has become the face of the country's pro-European course, has been arguing about this.
Elections in Georgia. The choice between the West and Russia
The politician elected in 2018 is in conflict with representatives of the Georgian Dream. She repeatedly criticized the government's actions, and one of the most important moments of the conflict was the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine. At that time, the government took a very cautious stance on this matter, completely different from Zurabishvili.
During the election campaign, the president of Georgia appealed to the opposition parties to unite. Her office presented the so-called Georgian Charter – a documentwhich was to oblige anti-government groups to create a common coalition government that would strive for reforms that would bring the country closer to the European Union. The Georgian Charter was finally signed by all pro-Western political forces.
The course of the elections is monitored by representatives of approximately one hundred national and 60 international organizations. Experts expect a record high turnout and great mobilization of young people. The elections will be held in a proportional system, a the electoral threshold is 5%.
For the first time in the history of the country nearly 90 percent of votes will be counted electronically. After voting closes, the devices will print the preliminary results.
