In Augustów (Masovian Voivodeship), police seized at least 300 kilograms of TNT and several hundred pieces of weapons and ammunition probably dating back to World War II on one of the properties. A 47-year-old man was arrested for hiding dangerous materials in a utility room.
Tuesday morning on a property in Augustów near Radom, police officers conducting a search at the request of the prosecutor's office found weapons and ammunition for firearms and artillery. The 47-year-old kept them in a farm building on the property he lived in.
– We only have an estimated size of explosives and weapons – several hundred weapons and ammunition and no less than 300 kilograms of TNT – said Aneta Góźdź, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Radom.
Specialists will identify the weapon
She added that the activities carried out are aimed at securing, neutralizing, identifying and determining the quantity of the seized weapons and explosives. – When the activities on site are completed, we will know exactly what kind of weapon and explosive it is and whether it is all from the war period or whether there are any new items – said the spokeswoman.
She added that the police were searching a farm in Augustów as part of an investigation conducted by the District Prosecutor's Office in Radom regarding illegal trade in weapons and ammunition, as well as collecting them without a permit and trading in explosives.
They had to evacuate residents
Due to the risk of explosion, a decision was made to evacuate residents from 65 houses located in the vicinity of the discovery. The activities started on Tuesday with the participation of expert forensic technicians and pyrotechnicians are continued on Wednesday. Once completed, the prosecutor's office will question the detained man to present him with charges and decide on possible preventive measures. The offense he is suspected of is punishable by six months to eight years' imprisonment.
According to the spokeswoman, procedural activities in the prosecutor's office will probably be carried out on Wednesday afternoon.
