The capital conservator of monuments informed about the transfer of tombstones from the Olęder cemetery in Kępa Tarchomińska and the lapidarium in Białołęka for conservation work.
Ongoing conservation activities of the Olęder cemetery in Kępa Tarchomińska and the lapidarium in Białołęka will allow to keep historic tombstones in good condition and improve aesthetic values - informs Michał Krasucki, the capital's conservator of monuments.
Conservation works
Only five tombstones of former inhabitants of Białołęka have survived to this day in Kępa Tarchomińska. The cemetery is included in the municipal register of monuments. – The tombstones from the Olęder cemetery are already in the conservation workshop – said Krasucki. – The conservator will focus on conservation work consisting of cleaning the slabs from biological deposits, making necessary repairs (including gluing the slab cracked in half and two crosses) and hydrophobic protection. After conservation, the slabs will be returned to the foundations.
Conservation also concerns 17 tombstones and obelisks from the lapidary at ul. Ruskowy Bród. It was established in 2012 and consists of plaques and obelisks from former cemeteries of German settlers from the Białołęka area. The tombstones date from the late 19th century to the 1930s. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
The office of the capital conservator of monuments decided to commission conservation works due to their poor condition and importance for the history of the district.
The Olęders drained large areas of Białołęka
The lapidarium and the cemetery are an important element of the cultural and historical heritage of Białołęka. – Its preservation in proper condition is extremely important for the inhabitants of the district, because it is a testimony of the former German settlers, the so-called Olędrach – noted the conservator.
The Olęders mastered the technique of draining swampy areas very well, which is why they easily settled in these difficult areas, where the Vistula River flooded. They contributed to the drainage of large areas of the current Białołęka district.
