The 72-year-old priest, Monsignor Lech Lachowicz from Szczytno, who was brutally beaten last Sunday at the rectory, is in a critical condition. The press spokesman of the Archdiocese of Warmia, Canon Father Marcin Sawicki, appealed to the faithful to pray for the priest.
As said by the press spokesman of the Archdiocese of Warmia, Monsignor Lech Lachowicz has been the parish priest of Saint Brother Albert in Szczytno since 1990. He is also the builder of this parish.
Father Marcin Sawicki admitted that this was the first such situation in the Archdiocese of Warmia. The entire community is shocked and saddened by her. – The situation that occurred on Sunday touched our entire diocese. We are shocked and saddened by this. So far, such an event has not taken place in our archdiocese, said the priest.
He added that the priest's health condition was critical. – Doctors are fighting for his life. We ask the faithful to pray for the prelate and his recovery, the priest appealed.
Brutal beating of a priest
The incident took place on Sunday (November 3) after 7 p.m. at the rectory in Szczytno. A witness to the event – a housekeeper – alerted the police about the attack.
– The 72-year-old parish priest was beaten very severely and was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He is being provided with medical assistance, his condition is serious, said Emilia PÅ‚awska, press officer of the Szczytno police.
– We are shocked and saddened by what happened. The parish priest is fighting for his life and is in a critical condition. Please pray for him, said the spokesman for the curia in Olsztyn, Fr. Marcin Sawicki. He added that the priest had been serving in Szczytno for years. He was the builder of the church where he serves as parish priest.
Prosecutor's investigation
The District Prosecutor's Office in Szczytno initiated an investigation into the attempted murder of a priest.
– Trial proceedings involving the detained 27-year-old man are scheduled for Tuesday. The man is detained for the case. He has no suspect status. We are waiting for an opinion on the victim's injuries. We're collecting evidence. The police perform intensive procedural and operational activities, explained Daniel Brodowski, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Olsztyn.
He added that “it is a success for the police that the person was selected, identified and detained so quickly.” He emphasized that during the arrest and search of the premises, a number of pieces of evidence were collected and are being examined.
