The Spanish police have detained one of their top officers, the commander of the Madrid anti-fraud and anti-money laundering department. The officer has already been charged with several charges, and in his house investigators seized EUR 20 million hidden in the walls and ceiling of the building – reports the daily “El Mundo”.

According to media reports, the couple was arrested in connection with a record-breaking cocaine smuggling business that was foiled last month. The police then seized 13 tons of the drug hidden in banana crates. The delivery was supposed to go to an importer from Alicante. The investigation revealed links between him and Sanchez Gil. A total of 16 people have been arrested in connection with the case.

EUR 20 million was found in the house of an arrested policeman

According to “El Mundo”, the detained policeman had been involved in illegal activities for at least 5 years. According to Spanish media reports, his role was to provide drug traffickers with information about inspections in Spanish ports, which allowed criminals to avoid getting caught. Sanchez Gil has been under wiretapping for some time – adds the daily “El Mundo”.

According to the newspaper's report, the man allegedly led a low-profile lifestyle and did not flaunt his money. However, during the raid on the policeman's house, investigators seized as much as EUR 20 million (equivalent to approximately PLN 86.9 million) in cash. It was hidden in the walls and ceiling of the building. The officers found another million euros (PLN 4.3 million) in the man's office. According to “El Mundo”, Sanchez Gil allegedly laundered part of his wealth by purchasing cryptocurrencies and a fleet of rental cars registered in the name of someone close to him.
