The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways intends to expand the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw – road engineers announced in a press release. Ultimately, A2 will have three lanes in both directions on the section from the Łódź Północ junction to the Pruszków junction and four lanes from the Pruszków junction to the Konotopa junction. Applications have already been submitted to the Voivode of Łódź and the Voivode of Masovia for a decision to authorize the implementation of a road investment.
As the road engineers said in a press release, “under the contract signed last year, design documentation for the widening of the A2 motorway with additional lanes between Łódź and Warsaw is being developed.”
Expansion of a key highway
The total length of the reconstruction will be 92 km, of which 89 km will be the construction of additional lanes, and the remaining 3 km will include works at the Łódź Północ junction (intersection of A1 and A2)..
GDDKiA she added in the announcement that “the contractor's task will be not only to develop a project for the construction of additional traffic lanes, but also for a renewable energy installation to power the road infrastructure and lighting installation.”
“All road-related installations (lighting, weather stations, etc.) are to be powered by renewable energy sources. The documentation contractor is to conduct a detailed economic analysis taking into account the costs of construction, operation and maintenance, including energy storage facilities. The design must indicate the most optimal the location of the installations and the precise definition of their layout. The solutions used on this section of the motorway are to constitute a model that we will be able to use in the construction or expansion of other sections managed by GDDKiA,” we read.
One of the “most complicated” tasks
Road experts argue that the expansion of the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw “will be one of the most difficult and complicated tasks, requiring a number of conditions to be taken into account“. “First of all, construction works will be carried out with road traffic. This will require the development and implementation of complex temporal traffic organization that will ensure effective vehicle passage,” we read.
It was also stated how road works will affect drivers. “In order to minimize inconvenience to drivers, two lanes are to be available for each direction (towards Warsaw and Poznań) throughout the construction period. It is absolutely necessary that the journey between the capital and the center of the country takes place without major disruptions. “The obligation to develop the temporary traffic organization, taking into account changes depending on the stage of construction works, rests with the designer,” the road engineers explained.
One of the most crowded roads
GDDKiA argued that “Both entrepreneurs running transport companies and ordinary drivers are waiting for the expansion of the highway between Łódź and Warsaw“.
“The route, built over a decade ago, is one of the most congested road sections in Poland. According to the latest General Traffic Measurement, the number of vehicles traveling between Łódź and Warsaw every day, depending on the place and time, ranges from over 50,000 to nearly 100,000 ” – road workers pointed out.
