Residents of the northern regions of Japan are struggling with difficult winter conditions. In some places there were snowstorms, and the layer of white fluff was several dozen centimeters. There were places where train traffic stopped.

Heavy snowfall has continued in northwestern Japan since Sunday. Several dozen centimeters of snow fell, among others, in the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, Fukushima and Gunma. Conditions were also made difficult by strong winds, which blew at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions.

Due to snow accumulation in Hirakawa on the island of Honshu, railway traffic was suspended – a snowplow was deployed on the tracks to remove excess snow.

According to forecasts, snowstorms are expected to last at least until Tuesday and cover most of Japan. Up to 60 cm of snow is expected to fall in places.

Warnings, risk of avalanches

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) predicts that the most severe conditions will mainly occur in the northern and western regions along the Sea of ​​Japan. The JMA also issued warnings for avalanches and the risk of snow accumulating on trees, power lines and trees. The services appealed to residents to be careful.

Strong winds are also dangerous, causing waves in the Ionian Sea to reach several meters.
