Tram drivers are getting ready to replace the tracks on the central section of Marszałkowska. They want to carry out the renovation work during the holidays. There will be green sedum between the tracks, but not along the entire length.

According to the town hall, the entire track along with the substructure will be replaced over a distance of approximately one kilometer. The basic scope of works will cover the section between Widok and Królewska streets (without the intersection with Świętokrzyska, which was rebuilt during the construction of the central section of the second metro line).

An additional option will be the reconstruction of the tracks near the intersection of Marszałkowska and Królewska streets, the “Królewska” stops (the one towards the center is narrow and has no shelter), the gas pipeline and the adaptation of the road system.

It will be green, new tracks will be built

“The works will improve the smoothness of tram traffic. The existing speed restrictions will disappear and the passage of vehicles will be quieter. On the section from Królewska to Świętokrzyska, a green track with sedum is planned, while on the section towards the Dmowski roundabout, passable structures will be used. This is due to the application of the Provincial Ambulance Station and Sanitary Transport “Meditrans” to maintain the ability of ambulances to move along this section tracks,” the town hall informed. You can read more about this decision here: Green, aesthetic, ecological. But the ambulances won't come for them

Separation strips with high and low green areas will be created along the entire length. The cross-section shows a line of trees along the track. However, greenery will be planted as part of a separate task.

In parallel with the track works, the Municipal Roads Authority will mark out two new pedestrian crossings and bicycle crossings – at the level of Złota and Sienkiewicza streets.

Holidays without trams, 3.5 months of difficulties

Drivers are also facing changes. A turning lane will be designated in the area of Złota Street, so there will be no need to drive to the Dmowski roundabout (instead of the recently filled-in tunnel). In turn, a new left turn will be built at Sienkiewicza, providing access to Złota and Zgoda.

“Offers for the reconstruction of the track will be known in January. The works, planned primarily for the holiday season of 2025, will involve the suspension of tram traffic between the Metro Ratusz Arsenał and Centrum stops for approximately 3.5 months. On the remaining sections of Marszałkowska and Andersa “Thanks to the construction of temporary overlay turnouts, it will be possible to run two-way trams,” the city hall reports.

Preparations to mark a crossing on the Saxon Axis

Tramwaje Warszawskie will use the track closure time to carry out other works on adjacent sections of the network: at Bankowy Square and between Królewska and Senatorska.

“At the height of the Saxon Garden, development will be prepared for the future pedestrian crossing towards Żelazna Brama Square – so that there will be no need to suspend tram traffic in the future when ZDM starts building a new pedestrian crossing and bicycle crossing through Marszałkowska along the Saska Axis” – summed up the town hall.
