Road conditions on Christmas Eve and Wednesday morning will be difficult across a large area of Poland. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns against dense fog, and in the southern parts of Poland against black ice.
Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first-degree warnings on a three-level, increasing scale.
IMWM warnings – icing
First degree warnings against icing apply in the following voivodeships:
- Lower Silesiain the following counties: Zgorzelec, Lubań, Lwówek, Karkonosze, Jelenia GóraKamienna Góra, Wałbrzych, WałbrzychKłodzko;
- Opole provincein the following counties: Nysa, Prudnik, Głubczyce;
- Silesianin the following counties: Racibórz, Rybnik, RybnikWodzisławski, ŻoryPszczyna, Cieszyn, Bielsko, Bielsko-BiałaŻywiec;
- Lesser Polandin the following counties: Oświęcim, Wadowice, Sucha, Myślenice, Nowy Targ, Limanowski, Nowy Sącz, Nowy SączGorlice;
- Podkarpackiein the following counties: Jasło, Krosno, KrosnoBrzozowski, Sanok, Lesko, Bieszczady, Przemyśl, Industry.
Locally, wet road surfaces and sidewalks are expected to freeze after sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The minimum temperature will be from -3 to -1 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature at the ground will be from -4 to -2 degrees Celsius.
The warnings will be valid until 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
IMWM warnings – icing
In the Tatra district (voivodeship Lesser Poland Voivodeship) there is a warning due to light drizzle, which may cause black ice.
It will be valid until 8 on Wednesday.
IMWM warnings – dense fog
IMWM warns of dense fog over a large area of the country. Yellow warnings apply to the following voivodeships:
- West Pomeranian Voivodeshipexcept western and northern counties;
- Pomeranianexcept for northern counties;
- Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship;
- Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship;
- Podlasie;
- Masovian Voivodeshipexcept southern counties;
- Łódź;
- Greater Polandoutside the following poviats: Wolsztyn, Grodzisk, Kościański, Leszno, LesznoGostyński, Rawicz;
- LubuskieStrzelce-Dresden district;
- Lower Silesiacounties: Milicz, Oleśnica, Oława, Strzelin;
- Opole province;
- Silesianexcept eastern counties;
- ŚwiętokrzyskieKońskie and Włoszczowa counties.
In these regions, local visibility may be below 200 meters in places. The warnings will be in force until 10 on Wednesday.
What are IMWM first degree warnings?
Conditions are expected to favor the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may cause material losses and pose a threat to health and life. Conducting business in conditions of exposure to these factors is difficult and dangerous. Expect difficulties resulting from carrying out activities in the hazardous area, including delays caused by traffic disruptions, disruptions to outdoor events or the possibility of their cancellation. Caution is recommended, the need to follow messages and developments in the weather situation.
