Border Guard officers participated in exercises in the Baltic Sea, in which they had to do an abordage. In the exercise scenario, a foreign unit with a suspicious load approached Naftoport in Gdańsk.
These are only exercises, but their script shows real threats on the Polish border in the Baltic Sea. Place of action: Gulf of Gdańsk, a ship of an unknown flag, with a strangely behaving crew and suspicious load.
– His name is Ivan, he got a codename. (…) This ship arrived from the region of the Russian Federation – said Cdr. Lt. Grzegorz Glista from the Maritime Border Guard Department.
In the exercise scenario, a dangerous ship is approaching Naftoport in Gdańsk. Because you don't want to stop – a special border guards enter the action. Commandos break on board and master the ship. Just before the abordure, his crew gets rid of evidence of a crime.
– These were probably packages with objects that could be dangerous. We are talking about explosives or ammunition – explained Katarzyna Przybysz from the Maritime Border Guard Department.
Russian jamming in the Baltic Sea
There were real problems at the exercises – with a patrol aircraft. He experienced disturbances in communication with the GPS system, probably because of the activities of Russian troops.
The Russians have long made navigation difficult in the Baltic Sea, disrupting satellite signals. They break the embargo with their shadow fleet and go on a goal of critical infrastructure: ports, pipelines and submarine.
Maneuvers on the sea external border of the European Union organized European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex. – The Baltic is a arena of geopolitical gameplay. And that's why, as Poland and Europe, we show that we are present here and protect boundaries as we need – said Hans Leijtens from Frontex.
On the sea border of the European Union, similar dangers are lurking as on the land border, but the protection of this area due to its extent seems even more difficult.
