Nurses every day struggle with insults, jerking, biting – Jolanta Januszczak from the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives mentioned in “Facts after Facts”. Piotr Bralewski – a resident doctor from the hospital in which the orthopedic doctor died, said that in the facility “there was such a thought that it could really be each of us”.

The media reported last week about attacks against health care workers. On Monday, a 35-year-old patient killed an orthopedist at the University Hospital in Krakow. On Wednesday, the father and son aged 51 and 18 attacked paramedics at the Hospital Emergency Department in Łuków (Lublin Voivodeship). On Friday at the Military Clinical Hospital in Krakow, a drunk patient hit and offended a doctor working at the hospital emergency department.

What do nurses have to struggle with?

Jolanta Januszczak, secretary of the National Board of the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives, said in “Facts after Facts” that “the aggression process had been built for many years, but it has intensified for five, six, seven years”. – We had Pandemia, now we have a state of war behind the eastern border. Unfortunately, we also have an underfunded, slightly inept health protection system, which we as medics are also trying to save, although there are not enough of us – she said.

Gościni TVN24 said that nurses must face “verbal aggression, insults, bodily aggression – jerking, biting, beating.” – This is also mental aggression – intimidation, harassment. Unfortunately, there is no day without aggression. I think that shocking facts of the last week have provoked a lot of interest. We must say: stop aggression – added Januszczak.

“It could have been each of us”

The second guest of “Facts after facts” was Piotr Bralewski – a member of the Lesser Poland National Trade Union of Doctors, a resident doctor from the hospital where the orthopedist doctor died. – The whole hospital is heavily taken over by what happened. (…) Among the colleagues from neighboring departments to the one in which the deceased doctor worked, we think that it could really be each of us. Each of us works in the same system that is defective – said Bralewski.

According to him, the healthcare system in Poland “generates a lot of frustration of patients, which is transferred to medical staff.”
