A heatwave has hit southeastern Australia. In some places the temperature will reach 40 degrees Celsius, several degrees higher than usually observed in January. Hot and dry conditions encourage bushfires to break out.
On Saturday, residents of southeastern Australia enjoyed relaxing on the beaches. In Victoria, temperatures were forecast to be 14 degrees higher than those typically recorded in early January. In the regional capital, Melbourne, the temperature was expected to rise to 37 degrees Celsius, and in its northern reaches – to 40 degrees Celsius.
Extremely late monsoons
According to ABC News, the first heat wave in Australia this year is accompanied by exceptionally dry weather. In early January, the northern regions of the continent are usually hit by monsoons, but they have not appeared yet this year. This is the latest start of the monsoon season in at least 25 years.
Hot, dry weather increases the risk of bushfires. A total fire ban has been introduced in parts of Victoria and South Australia. The spread of flames may be fueled by strong and violent winds, which will calm down only on Sunday evening.
According to meteorologists, the heat wave will ease at the beginning of next week. On Tuesday, it will still be hot around Sydney, and due to the approaching cold air masses, the temperature is expected to drop by up to 15 degrees within 24 hours.
