A fight broke out between representatives of the government and the opposition at Monday's meeting of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The Speaker of the Chamber decided to end the session. The reason was mutual accusations of responsibility for the tragedy in Novi Sad.
Originally, the Serbian government was to discuss the budget proposal for 2025. However, at the beginning of the session, opposition representatives demanded a vote of no confidence in the government in connection with accident in Novi Sadin which 14 people died. Speaker Ana Brnabic rejected this request.
The incidents occurred when the Prime Minister entered the room Serbia Milosz Vuczevic and government representatives. Opposition parliamentarians raised banners with the words: “Corruption kills” and “You have blood on your hands.” There were also shouts of “murderers”.
Officials responded by raising banners: “Yellow scum, corruption and theft are your middle names” and “Yellow scum want war, and Serbia wants jobs.” This color is attributed to the groups that took power after the fall of Slobodan Milosevic's regime in the early 21st century and are currently in the opposition.
Physical clashes broke out when some oppositionists tried to remove the banners of the ruling majority, and government representatives tore away a banner with a hand painted in red paint – a symbol of demonstrations related to the tragedy in Novi Sad.
The fighting parliamentarians were separated by parliament security. After the deliberations were interrupted, the parties began to blame each other for causing the incidents. The Speaker of Parliament accused the opposition of “trying to seize power by force.” The chairman of the opposition Freedom and Justice Party, Dragan Djilas, said that Brnabic “just carried out a coup in Serbia on the orders of President Aleksandar Vucic.”
