Brazil's Senate has voted in favor of banning the use of cell phones in schools. The bill on this matter has previously passed the lower house of Congress and only needs the president's signature to enter into force. This is considered a formality. The vast majority of adult Brazilians also support the ban.

The Brazilian Senate on Wednesday passed a bill banning students from using cell phones in schools. The regulations are to apply both during lessons and breaks. The exception are situations when they are needed for learning and their use is recommended by the teacher. The regulations are to be enforced in both public and private schools. Their aim is to reduce the negative impact that excessive smartphone use has on children and young people. These, as Senator Alessandro Vieira assessed, “go beyond academic performance and lead to mental health problems.”

The regulations are also supported by the vast majority of adult Brazilians. As the results show survey conducted by the Locomotive Institute and QuestionPro, 82% support the ban. parents and 72 percent people without children. Support for regulation is visible in all age groups, regardless of gender, adds Agência Brasil.

The state of Sao Paulo recently adopted even stricter regulations. There, students will not be able to use the phone not only during lessons and breaks, but also during extracurricular activities.
