Management website Xformerly Twitter, “gave in to demands and began blocking extremist accounts and paying fines to the Brazilian government,” BBC News reports.
Elon Musk agreed to pay Brazil millions of dollars
Limitations in using the platform belonging to Elon Musk, were in force in Brazil from August. Judge Alexandre de Moraes punished the website for “refusing to delete the accounts of right-wing radicals accused of spreading disinformation.”
On Tuesday, the ban was lifted, and de Moraes said that all restrictions would take effect immediately, with the aim of unblocking the accounts of all Brazilian users within 24 hours.
As the judge explained, X paid at the request of the Brazilian authorities punishment in the amount of 28 million reais (approx $5.1 million).
Brazil: Service X available again
As described by BBC News, Elon Musk entered into conflict with the Brazilian justice system in April, when Moraes ordered the billionaire's website to close dozens of accounts that, according to the judge, spread disinformation.
Initially, X closed its branch in Brazil, claiming that he will not submit to censorshipand Musk himself called the judge a “tyrant, dictator and Voldemort” (a villain from the Harry Potter books). In September, however, the billionaire changed his mind, re-appointed the company's representative in Brazil and started paying fines.
Reuters reminds that Brazil is the sixth country with the largest number of users of the X portal. As of April, the account on the platform had approximately 21.5 million inhabitants this country.
