Brazil. The BRICS group of countries is expanding to include another country – Indonesia

Indonesiathe world's fourth most populous country, has previously expressed interest in joining the group. The country located in Southeast Asia received permission to join two years ago, but its authorities postponed the decision until the end of the elections held last year. President Prabowo Subianto took office in Indonesia in October 2024.

Indonesia's joining the BRICS bloc is part of the idea of ​​expanding the group initiated at the summit in Johannesburg in 2023. Among others, they joined the group Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and United Arab Emirates. Among the countries considering the possibility of joining is: Saudi Arabia.

“Indonesia, together with other members of the group, supports the idea of ​​reforming global international institutions and contributes to deepening cooperation in the countries of the Global South,” the Brazilian authorities said in a statement. Brazil leads the bloc under the presidency until the end of 2025.

BRICS, originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is definitely striving to change the order of the world's economic structure, and Russia, which is trying to play a leading role in it, is trying to oppose the bloc to the United States and, more broadly, the West. To this end, it attracts other developing countries to its side, primarily from Africa, because that is where they have the largest number. The block is inconsistent in every way – except mighty China's economy is Ethiopia, where out of 126 million people, almost 30 million live in extreme poverty.

The term BRICS comes from the first letters of the English names of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The last summit of the bloc took place in October 2024 in Kazan, Russia.
