For several days, the Greek island of Santorini has been affected by moderate earthquakes. According to new forecasts, the situation is already starting to stabilize, and the risk of phenomena with greater strength is becoming less and less likely.
Greek experts believe that the seismic situation in the region of the Cycladz Islands is stabilizing and the risk of a strong shock with a magnitude 6 decreases.
– Signals regarding the development of the phenomenon on Santorini are currently optimistic – said Sejsmologist Kostas Papazachos, quoted on Saturday by Protothema. He estimated that in recent days “the situation is improving” and stabilizes, but nature can always be surprised.
Seismic activity begins to weaken
Efthymios Liekas, head of the organization for anticipating earthquakes and protection against them (OASP), assessed that seismic activity is weakening. According to him, the shock with magnitude 6 or larger is less and less likely.
“I think that the script of such an earthquake is already excluded,” he said on Saturday. According to him, the accumulated seismic energy in the region is already gradually starting to distract. – Today we are a little more optimistic than yesterday – he said.

On Friday, the Greek volcanologist George Wugiukalakis said that the strongest earthquake in the area of Santorini may have a magnitude of about 6. According to him, even such a shock would not cause serious consequences for the surrounding Cycladz islands. The hypocentra shocks are located at a distance of 25-30 kilometers from the islands of iOS, Amorgos, Anafi and Santorini.
