A 49-year-old man who got behind the wheel with more than two permille in his body faces up to three years in prison. He never had a driving license and was driving to buy alcohol.

On Monday, January 13, around 8:40 p.m., the officer on duty at the Ciechanów police station received a report that a witness had caught a drunk driver on national road No. 50 in Baby.

– The reporting person's attention was drawn to a man who had problems with maintaining balance, was staggering and in this state he got behind the wheel of an Opel and drove away. The witness did not remain indifferent and followed him. He stopped the driver in Baby and prevented him from driving further. He then informed the police and stayed with the driver until the officers arrived, says Asp. Magda Sakowska from the police in Ciechanów.

No driving license, but with blood alcohol levels

Behind the wheel of the Opel was a 49-year-old resident of the Ciechanów district. A breathalyzer test showed more than two per mille of alcohol in the man's body. After checking police databases, it turned out that the 49-year-old had never had a driving license. He explained to the police that he was going to buy alcohol.

He was taken into police custody, and after sobering up, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. For the crime committed, he faces a penalty of up to three years in prison, a heavy fine and a driving ban. He will also be responsible for driving without a license.

– The exemplary reaction and attitude of the witnesses to the event probably prevented the tragedy. Let's remember: even anonymous information provided to police that someone is driving under the influence of alcohol can save someone's life – adds Asp. Magda Sakowska.
