Onaikel Infante Abreu, a young opposition activist from Havana, has been held since October 2023 and is being tortured in the Combinado del Este prison for writing anti-government slogans with his own blood on the prison wall, according to the Cuban Institute for Freedom of Speech and the Press (ICLEP), a human rights organization.
Imprisoned in a prison in Havana, the capital Cubaopposition activist Onaikel Infante Abreu painted anti-government slogans on a prison wall using his own blood, the organization reported on Wednesday human rights Cuban Institute for Freedom of Speech and the Press (ICLEP). The Cuban organization, quoted by independent media, specified that Infante Abreu used his own blood because it was impossible to obtain paint in custody.
“Freedom. Homeland and Life. Freedom for political prisoners. No more starvation for the nation!” – wrote on the wall of the prison an opponent of the regime in Havana, who was punished for his actions.
“He will never stop talking about a free Cuba”
The prisoner's wife told ICLEP management that among the sanctions imposed on Abreu after painting anti-government slogans are torture, including the permanent immobilization of the prisoner with handcuffs, both on his hands and feet. “They do not take them off during meals, baths or when using the toilet,” the Cuban human rights organization reported, citing Acosta Toscano, the prisoner's wife.
– He keeps saying his thing, that he won't shut up even if they put handcuffs on him, that they can tie him up, kill him, but he will never stop talking about a free Cuba, where today they are killing people with hunger – said Toscano.
Opposition Fighting in Cuba
Infante Abreu was imprisoned in October 2023 for his participation in a protest against the government in Havana. The Cuban justice system has not yet issued a ruling in his case.
In June this year, the independent human rights organization Cubalex reported that five opponents of the Havana regime who were under surveillance by the security services had died on the island in May.
According to her report, that month there were also 317 incidents described as “violent actions” against Cuban citizens by government officials.
