Heavy rains caused traffic disruptions in Cyprus. On the night from Thursday to Friday, there were floods and landslides in the area of the city of Limassol, the effects of which were cleaned up throughout the day. Meteorologists predict further heavy rainfall over the weekend.
According to the Kathimerini website, heavy rainfall hit the southern regions of Cyprus on the night from Thursday to Friday. It rained the heaviest in the Limassol district, near the popular resort of the same name.
More dangers on the horizon
Heavy rainfall led to flooding. Near the town of Pareklisia, water accumulated on the road surface and cars had difficulty navigating the flooded streets. Water was not the only difficulty drivers had to face. A landslide struck the road near the village of Alasa, and in many other places the roads were covered with broken tree branches.
On Friday, the weather calmed down for a while, giving road crews a chance to efficiently clean the roads after the downpours – in some places, cleaning lasted all day. However, cloud cover will increase on Saturday, bringing more rainfall. Rain is expected to intensify overnight Saturday into Sunday, and snowfall may occur in higher areas. The deterioration of weather will also be accompanied by strong, gusty winds.
