Donald Trump Falsely Suggests Taylor Swift and Her Fans Support Him

On Sunday Donald Trump shared a post on his social media platform Truth Social suggesting that he had the support of Taylor Swift's fans. “I accept!” he wrote in the comment. Over the next two days, the former president's post was retweeted nearly three thousand times and collected over nine thousand likes. At the same time, it made headlines in the world's media as an example of disinformation. It contained potentially misleading images created using artificial intelligence. “Trump posts fake photos of Taylor Swift and her friends created by artificial intelligence, falsely suggesting he has the singer's support,” wrote CNN. “Trump falsely suggests Taylor Swift supports him,” indicated the BBC.

The post sparked a backlash among Swift's fans, known as Swifties, who accused Trump of spreading misinformation.

Most of the images shared by Trump were originally published on X (formerly Twitter – ed.) by an account declaring in its description affiliation with the MAGA (Make America Great Again – ed.), a movement that brings together ardent supporters of the former president. One of these graphics was a remake of a poster used during two world wars, encouraging people to join the US military. Instead of the image of Uncle Sam (personification of the United States – ed.), the image showed the face of Taylor Swift. It was accompanied by the following caption: “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump”.

In addition to the aforementioned poster, Trump also took two other graphics from his supporter's account. These depicted women wearing T-shirts with the words “Swifties for Trump” written on them. According to CNN and NBC News, not all of the people in these images actually exist. According to the portals, some of them were created by artificial intelligence. The people in the next graphic that Trump circulated on Sunday also seem to have been created by AI.

The politician also took this one from the X platform. It was shared there by an account supporting him called “@amuse” (entertainment – ed.). The graphic consisted of a caption suggesting that after cancellation of the artist's concerts in Vienna her fans were supposed to turn to Trump, and six photo-like images of women wearing “Swifties for Trump” T-shirts. However, as user “@amuse” himself notes on X, almost all of these images are slightly modified variations of one person's appearance.

Responding to another user who said that “AI didn't even try to create different women,” “@amuse” replied that “(AI) at least changed their hair.” In response to accusations of spreading false content, the user also pointed out that he had labeled the graphic as “satire” and in its description emphasized that “although it should exist, the 'Swifties for Trump' movement doesn't.” In another post, the Twitter user expressed his amusement at the fact that Donald Trump retweeted the image he had added. Trump himself did not indicate the origin of the graphics anywhere.

The appearance of images on Donald Trump supporters’ accounts suggesting that Taylor Swift’s fans have given the politician their support is surprising, as MAGA members have tended to portray the singer in a negative light. Given her critical remarks about Trump and her previous statements of support for select Democrats, including Joe Bidenhave also involved her in numerous conspiracy theories in the past.
