Easter Monday. Which stores are open

Due to the regulations regarding the ban on trade on Sundays and holidays, most stores, including large retail chains, are closed on Easter Monday.

However, the Act provides for exceptions. Shopping can be done in small housing stores. According to the provisions of the facility, they may be open if the owner stands and serves clients behind the counter.

The regulations provide catalog 32 exclusions. The ban on trade does not include, among others postal activity, if revenues from this activity constitute at least 40 percent. revenues from the sale of a given facility. In addition, it does not apply in confectioneries, ice cream parlors, liquid fuel stations, in florists, in press stores or in cafes.

Some stores operating on the principle may also be open franchise using special permits. On Easter Monday, stores of some chains, such as Żabka, Carrefour Express and Lewiatan, can also be opened. However, it is worth checking the hours of individual facilities in advance, because they may be different than usual.

Self -service vending machines and 24 -hour maintenance -free shops are also not subject to festive restrictions.

The act gradually introducing the ban on Sunday trading entered into force on March 1, 2018. From 2020, the ban on trade has not been valid only on seven Sundays in the year: the last Sundays of January, April, June and August, as well as on Sunday before Easter. After the last amendment, the restrictions also do not apply to three (previously two) subsequent Sundays preceding Christmas.

For breaking the trade ban on Sundays, it is threatened with PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000. PLN penalty, and with persistent violation of the regulations – the penalty of restriction of liberty.

On February 1, the amendment entered into force providing for the establishment of on December 24 a day off for all employees, including employees of commercial institutions, for which – in accordance with the Act on trade limitation on Sunday and holidays – Christmas Eve was a working day until 2pm. From this year, three Sundays preceding Christmas Eve will be commercial. The novella also predicts that in December a trade employee will not be able to work more than two Sundays.

At the end of December last year president Andrzej Duda He decided to refer the Free Christmas Eve act to the Constitutional Tribunal in the following mode. The president's reservations relate to the introduction of the third, additional Sunday working in December for trade workers.

This year there are six Sundays, in which there will be no trade ban. They fall out in 2025: April 27, June 29, August 31, December 7, December 14 and December 21.
