A great garbage dump in Kamieniec is like a monument to helplessness. The old, used clothing in thousands of tons has already burned several dozen times, but waste does not have hazardous status, so the municipality will not get money from the government for utilization. Will anything change in this case to put the owners of a dump in a court?

Almost 20 million kilograms of old rags and four owners who will stand for this gigantic garbage can.

The prosecutor's office accuses members of the board and representatives of a garbage company from Greater Poland, who brought used clothing and textiles to Kamieniec near Lębork in Pomerania, to organize and conduct an illegal landfill of waste, which, due to their storage, pose a threat to people and the natural environment, like Paweł Wnuk from the District Prosecutor's Office in Słupsk.

The head of a nearby commune does not change his words, because he has rubbish from all over Europe today. – Berets of the Bundeswehr soldiers we pulled out there, with inscriptions, with names, so they also came from abroad – informs Jerzy Bańka, head of the Cewice commune.

It was and is a real ecological bomb. The fires of the landfill in Kamieniec exploded in series. Only in two years, between 2021 and 2023, there were as many as 39. The fire appeared every few or several days. – It stinks strongly. You have to close the windows even in Siemirowice – says Irena, a resident of Kamieniec.

According to the prosecutor's office, the cause of most fires was self -ignition. – In a few cases, as stated, the causes of these fires were arson. The perpetrators of these arson, however, the prosecutor's office failed to determine – informs Paweł Wnuk from the District Prosecutor's Office in Słupsk.

It was also not possible to prevent poisonous substances from rotting rags, including nickel, copper and chromium into the soil. According to environmental protection staff, sewage system and water intake are safe for now. But the owners of the dump are still unpunished, although the fines for illegal storage are high.

– It is a million PLN 250,000 in total. Things are in execution. We did not record influence for a moment – says Beata Cieślik from the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk.

The accused don't explain why they don't pay. – My client did not decide to explain to the prosecutor's authority. She also refused to answer the questions – informs Aleksandra Mrotek, the representative of the accused Anna K.

The cost of liquidation of a dump is over PLN 40 million. The municipality will not help the accused in utilization, because it is half of its budget. There is also nothing to count on government help. – We have a waste code as textiles. These are not hazardous waste. So at the moment it also closes my way to funding – says Jerzy Bańka, head of the Cewice commune.

The accused faces up to 10 years in prison. Already before the trial they were banned from running a junk business.
