“Shogun”, “The Bear”, “Crimes Next Door” and “Detective: Night Country” – these are the series titles that received the most nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards. The second season of “The Bear” broke another record in the history of American awards. Meryl Streep made her debut once again, and 91-year-old Carol Burnett has a chance for her eighth statuette.
We know the list of nominees for the Primetime Emmy Awards 2024, which are awards for the best television productions broadcast in primetime – that is, in the early evening hours. The Primetime Emmy is one of several groups of Emmy awards, awarded by the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – commonly called the Television Academy.
This year's list of nominations was dominated by three titles: “Shogun” (25 nominations), “The Bear” (23) and “Zbrodnie po neighborzku” (21). At the same time, “The Bear” became the most nominated comedy series in a single year. The previous record was held by “Rockefeller Plaza 30”, which received 22 nominations in 2009.
This is another record for “The Bear”. At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series won 10 statuettes. With this result, it made history as the series with the most awards in a single year for a first season and as the comedy series with the most awards in a single year for a first season.
More than 30 percent fewer reports
The Television Academy announced in a statement on Wednesday that the nominees were selected in a vote in which nearly 22,000 academy members participated. Television productions that premiered between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024 were taken into account.
According to Variety, a total of 229 titles were submitted in the categories of best drama series, best comedy series and best miniseries/anthology series. This is 33 percent less than last year (when the list consisted of 309 series). The smaller number of submissions was due to the postponement of the premiere dates of some of them – such as the second season of “Blood of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us”. These delays are related to last year's strike of the labor unions, which unite the writers and actors in Hollywood. So we can expect an exciting race to the 2025 Emmys.
This year, the Television Academy has changed the way it presents nominated productions slightly, indicating the American television station or streaming service, depending on the American premiere of a given title. Therefore, in the case of international productions, this assignment may differ from which company actually commissioned the production. From this perspective, Netflix received the most nominations – 107. In second place was the television station FX (93 nominations) and jointly HBO and MAX – two brands belonging to Warner Bros. Discovery (the group also owns TVN24) – which received 91 nominations. For comparison, last year HBO received 127 nominations.
Among HBO and MAX productions, the best performers were: “Detective: Night Country” and “Hacks”. The fourth part of the anthology “Detective” received 19 nominations, including two for Jodie Foster (for best leading actress in a miniseries/anthology and in the category of best miniseries/anthology series – as one of the producers of “Detective”). The second season of the comedy hit starring Jean Smart (“Hacks”) received 16 nominations this year.
Meryl Streep among the debutants
The Television Academy noted that 36 people received their first Emmy nominations in 12 acting categories. They include renowned artists such as Dakota Fanning, Ryan Gosling, Lilly Gladstone, Parker Posey and Paul Rudd. Gladstone (“Bridge of Murder”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective: Nightland”) became the first Native women in the history of the awards to receive nominations in acting categories.
Meryl Streep earned her first nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in “Crimes Next Door”. At the same time, this is her sixth Emmy nomination. Streep has already won three statuettes, two in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Miniseries or Television Movie (“Holocaust” – 1978 and “Angels in America” - 2003) and one in the category of Best Narrator (“Five Came Back” – 2017).
American television legend Carol Burnett has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the age of 91. Her role in Palm Royal makes her the oldest actress to be nominated in comedy categories. Burnett has won seven out of 24 nominations to date.
Four nominations this year were received by one of the most recognizable representatives of American comedy: Maya Rudolph. The actress was among the nominees in the following categories: best original music and lyrics (“Maya Rudolph Mother's Day Monologue” – “Saturday Night Live”), best actress in a leading role in a comedy series (“Cash”), best guest appearance in a comedy production (“Saturday Night Live”), best dubbing performance (“Big Mouth”).
The 76th Emmy Awards will take place on September 15.
