Sudan torn by conflicts
Fighting between government army units (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been ongoing in Sudan since April 2023. Two years earlier, the army and the RSF staged a joint coup d'état. However, the plan to incorporate the RSF into the regular army caused a split that led to a civil war and mass flights of the endangered population.
According to the UN, over 24,000 people died as a result of the 20-month-long war. people, and more than 14 million people, i.e. approx. 30 percent population, were forced to leave their homes. It is estimated that approximately 3.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries, including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.
Sudan is the third country to have a famine declared in the last 15 years, alongside South Sudan and Somalia.
