Heavy snowfall throughout the day led to traffic paralysis in Finland. There were numerous collisions in the vicinity of Helsinki.
In some places in Finland, from a few to even 20 centimeters of snow fell on Wednesday. On Wednesday evening, due to damage and icing of the traction system, approximately 30,000 customers were left without electricity. The most difficult conditions are in the south of the country, including the capital.
There were several dozen road accidents and collisions east of Helsinki. A bus carrying students ran off the road in Porvoo this afternoon. Its passengers were taken to hospital for tests, the emergency medical services reported.
An armed forces truck, a passenger car and a van collided near the town of Kouvola, located about 140 kilometers northeast of the capital.
The weather services warn that many roads are difficult and dangerous, and the Finnish police reminds that failure to replace tires with winter ones may result in a fine.
Canceled flights, trains, ferries
In Helsinki, some suburban trains did not run on the tracks. The airline Finnair canceled some flights and many connections were delayed.
In the west of the country, ferries scheduled for Thursday from Vaasa to Umea in Sweden were canceled due to the storm.
