Fire in Gdańsk. Where the pollution hit. IMGW simulation

On Wednesday in Gdańsk there was a serious fire and the RCB alert was released before as toxic smoke. The simulation of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has shown that with adverse aura such impurities can travel far.

On Wednesday afternoon, a warehouse fire broke out in the Gdańsk district. The fire appeared in the hall, where 1,500 city bikes were stored, most equipped with an electric drive, and 1000 batteries. The fire was controlled on Thursday morning, but for many hours a cloud of black smoke hovered over the city. In connection with the fire, it was also issued RCB alert warning about the possible presence of toxic substances in smoke.

According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management on Thursday, the analysis of satellite data allowed the lack of combustion products in the air over Poland. “The cloud had mainly regional range,” it was conveyed. “It was dispels with the transport of particles for further distances. Part of the aerosols was invented by rainfall,” he added IMGW.

Trajectory simulations

On Wednesday, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management published on the website X a simulation of the spread of pollutants from the fire in the period from Wednesday from 3pm to Thursday to 7am.

Immediately after the outbreak of the fire, the smoke molecules were to move with the air mainly south and southeast, over Warmia and MasuriaMazovia – including Warsaw – as well as the Świętokrzyska Land and Lesser Poland. In the following hours, the direction of air movement was to change, and with it the trajectory of pollution.

The Mathematical Modeling Center also published a simulation showing how the emission of pollutants from Gdańsk would look like in the following days if the fire lasted. Molecules could hit distant parts of Europe, from Greenland to Ural. Experts pointed out, however, that this is a model course of pollutant spread of source and does not consider the actual amount of emissions.
