Fishing spent winter in warm countries. They covered several thousand kilometers to return to breeding grounds in the Lubusz land. – In this region, about 30 percent of the national population of this genre has its nests – said Michał Bielewicz, a regional nature conservator in Gorzów Wielkopolski.

Fishing in Poland (Pandion Haliaetus) are rare and exposed to extinction. It is estimated that only about 40 breeding pairs of these predatory birds live in our country. In the Lubuskie Voivodeship itself, their number is estimated at 11 – in the Lubuskie Voivodeship, fish, many lakes, rivers and forests have at their disposal, and this creates the perfect place for nesting and reproduction. For this reason, our region is one of the most important national refuge of this species – said Michał Bielewicz.

Rybłowy returned to their audits

This year, most breeding pairs came to the Lubusz land at the turn of March and April; Sometimes the return stretched and one of the partners appeared with a 2-3 week delay. These birds winter mainly in West and Central Africa. – We know from this year's first observations that Fisheries have already returned to their audits in the Barline Forest, Lubniewice and Międzyrzecki forests and to forest areas in the southern part of our region – said Bielewicz. In Lubusz Land, the protection of Rybołowów includes, among others, annual monitoring of breeding stations, the construction of artificial nests on trees and energy poles, protection of feeding grounds and breeding grounds, and conducting an educational campaign among foresters, hunters and fish ponds and lake tenants. From 2011 to 2025 in the province Lubuskie over 100 artificial nests on trees and energy poles were installed. Added to this are the protection zones of Ostoi Rybłowów – year -round with a radius of up to 200 meters from the nest and periodic, with a radius of up to 500 meters, which apply from the beginning of March to the end of August. – It is forbidden to stay people within these zones, as well as cutting out trees and shrubs or erecting facilities, equipment and installations, as well as conducting works that change the water relations of these areas – explained Bielewicz.

Species covered by strict species protection

The record in terms of the birth of Rybłowów living in Lubuskie in the 21st century was 2022. Effective breeding was then registered in eight of 11 pairs of birds, which raised a total of 20 young people. A year earlier, effective breeding was recorded in six couples who raised 16 chicks. Fisheries reach a mass of up to two kilograms, with a wing range of up to almost two meters. They have dark brown-white coloration and a characteristic dark belt along the eyes and on the chest around the neck. Fish are their main food. After returning to the nests, females lay eggs about mid -April. After raising the young, i.e. most often at the end of August, the fisheries will leave our country again and fly away to the wintering grounds. In Poland, fish is covered by strict species protection and included on the red list of Polish birds and in the Polish Red Book of Animals; On a European scale, it is protected by international law, i.e. the Berne Convention and the Bird Directive. In our country, lovers of these predators can observe them live via webcks installed at several sockets – e.g. in Lubuskie, such a device is located at the nest on the mast of one of the base telephony base station, and in the neighboring province. West Pomeranian – in the Barline Forest. – Such messages not only have great scientific value, but also the educational and popularizing ideas of protecting this extremely endangered species in Poland – noted Bielewicz.
