The snowstorms that have been passing through Great Britain in recent days are causing serious difficulties. Unfortunately, the forecast shows further snowfall, and the British are also at risk of flooding. There is a risk of flooding due to melting snow and rainfall in over 150 towns.
The difficult hydrological situation comes after heavy snowfall hit parts of the UK over the weekend. The increase in temperature caused the snow to melt quickly. According to the British Environment Protection Agency, this snow, combined with rainfall, has put over 150 towns at risk of flooding. Some rivers are close to bursting their banks.
On Monday, flooding occurred, among others, in the town of Edenbridge, located approximately 45 kilometers south of London. Some roads and properties were flooded.
Earlier this year, there were floods in northwest England. For example, flooding occurred in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester.
Difficulties on roads and airports
On Sunday, snowstorms led to traffic paralysis. The most difficult situation occurred in the north of England, as well as in Scotland and Wales, where several centimeters of snow fell in some places. Some main roads and highways were closed. There are still problems at airports. Although all airports are now operating normally, Liverpool and Manchester airports are experiencing delays. Airport authorities appeal to be patient and follow the announcements.
“Our runways are open, but due to previous disruptions, some departures and arrivals may be delayed,” it was written on Manchester Airport's social media profile.
Winter weather also persists in Ireland. Due to snowfall and frost, many roads remain impassable. About 60,000 households had no electricity on Sunday, and 15,000 had no electricity. farms lacked water. Where the situation was most difficult, schools were closed.
