The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) published a notice about the withdrawal of a food product that was available in Lidl stores. Tests of rye bread flour produced by Gdańskie Młyny showed that the permissible level of toxic substances was exceeded.

“Product tests have shown permissible level of ochratoxin A exceededtherefore the manufacturer cannot guarantee the full safety of the product,” Lidl said in a statement posted on the chain's website.

Withdrawal of rye bread flour

“The new available data may suggest, although ambiguously, that Ochratoxin A (OTA) has a genotoxic effect through direct DNA damage. Experts have confirmed that this substance may be carcinogenic to the kidneys” – wrote GIS in the study “Ochratoxin A in food – risk assessment for public health”.

“Items from the batches indicated above can be returned in any Lidl store without having to show a receipt,” the chain assured.

GIS warning

“As a result of tests conducted by the State Sanitary Inspection, it was found higher than permissible level of ochratoxin A in batch 31492/24 of rye flour type 720 bread. Additional tests conducted by the manufacturer on a sample from 3 different batches (31485/24, 31492/24 and 31495/24) made from the same raw material confirmed the non-compliance,” GIS wrote in a statement.

He added that “ochratoxin A is a toxin produced by fungi of the Aspergillus and Penicillium species, which has a harmful effect on human health.”

“At the request of GIS, a risk assessment was prepared by experts from the National Institute of Public Health PZH – National Research Institute, according to which consumption of the product with the given batch numbers may pose a risk to the health of consumers,” the Sanitary Inspectorate reported.
