A prison guard at London's Wandsworth Prison, Linda De Sousa Abreu, was filmed having sex with an inmate while on duty. The intercourse was recorded by another prisoner using a mobile phone smuggled into the cell. The woman will now go to prison herself – on Monday she was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
On June 25, 2024, Linda De Sousa Abreu, a guard at HMP Wandsworth Prison in London, was recorded having sex with an inmate. The recording was made by another prisoner in the same cell who had a cell phone smuggled into the prison. The video almost immediately found its way onto the Internet, where it quickly became very popular.
Three days later, the woman was detained at Heathrow Airport in London, from where she tried to fly to Madrid with her father. On her way to the airport, she allegedly called Wandsworth Prison to say she would not be returning to work.
The guard had sex with an inmate
During a hearing on July 29, De Sousa Abreu pleaded guilty to abuse of public power, and on Monday, her case was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court. The 31-year-old was sentenced to 15 months in prison, of which she will have to serve at least half of the sentence in custody and the rest on parole.
When announcing the sentence, Judge Martin Edmunds KC said that the officer “knew that her behavior was prohibited” and the crime she committed “was extremely serious.” – You engaged in sexual activity with a prisoner. “This violated your role as an officer and was an offense that undermines discipline at the prison and puts other officers at increased risk,” the judge told the now-former guard. According to Sky News, the court found that De Sousa Abreu had consented to sex with the inmate, as well as to filming the intercourse by another inmate. The inmate then sent the recording to his friend, who in turn posted the video on the Internet, although the inmate did not consent to this. De Sousa Abreu admitted to having sex with the same inmate on another occasion.
The judge turned his attention to the other guards
While passing sentence, Judge Martin Edmunds said that “the recording became popular on the Internet and caused great harm” to other officers of Wandsworth Prison. He added that some officers said that after the recording they “became victims of abuse and harassment by prisoners.” “It is inevitable that the damage for which you are liable had an impact, to some extent, on the prison as a whole,” the judge said. In a statement issued after the judgment by the spokesman for the Prison Service in Great Britain, we read that “the overwhelming majority of Prison Service employees are hard-working and honest.” As it was added, “we catch the small minority that breaks the rules.”
