About a thousand people gathered in front of the American consulate in Nuk, the capital of Greenland. They were protested in connection with the statements of the US President Donald Trump about the takeover of the island.

On Saturday, before the American consulate in Nuk, protesters sang the hymn of Greenland “Nunarput Utoqqarsuanngoravi (our old country – translated)”, and they brought the national flags and banners they left, plucking them into the snow. There was no American flag on the consulate building.

The manifestation was attended by the outgoing Prime Minister Mute B. Egede (leftist party IA) and the winner of Tuesday parliamentary elections and the likely future head of government Jens-Frederik Nielsen from the Liberal Party of Democrats. Both politicians gave short speeches.

According to local media, about a thousand people took part in the demonstration and it was one of the largest gatherings in the island's history. Police estimates indicate about 800 people. One of the banners was written: “Yankees home”.

On the same day, a smaller manifestation also took place in the city of Sisimiut.

Trump repeats the desire to take over Greenland

Donald Trump on Thursday during a meeting with the Secretary General NATO Marek Rutt said that “he thinks that Greenland would be joined, and NATO Secretary General can be very helpful in this.” He suggested that the United States could send more soldiers to the island.

On Friday, the bosses of all five parties in the Greenland parliament issued a statement in which they wrote that they did not accept Trump's repetitive statements about the takeover of the island. “We consider such behavior to be unacceptable to friends and allies in the defense alliance (NATO – ed.)” – they emphasized.

Greenland is an autonomous territory depending on Denmark. The Democrats party, which won the last parliamentary elections, is in favor of the island's independence, but only after reaching economic independence. The Greenland authorities are dependent on subsidies on the government in Copenhagen.
