Type 2 diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle – for example, spending a long time in front of the TV – are the main factors of atherosclerotic risk of cardiovascular disease. Shortening the time of watching television to an hour a day can in people with a genetic tendency to type 2 diabetes significantly reduce the risk of heart disease – according to research published in “Journal of the American Heart Association”.

“Type 2 diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle, including long -term sitting, are the main factors of atherosclerotic risk of cardiovascular disease,” the main author of the study Dr. Youngwon Kim, a professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong, pointed out in a press release. How the tests went

Researchers from the University of Hong Kong analyzed medical documentation and lifestyle 346 916 adults, whose personal details were in the biomedical database and research resources in Great Britain. Participants were on average 56 years old and were watched for almost 14 years. At that time, at least 21,265 people developed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). “Our study provides new insights on the role of limiting the time of watching television in preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in everyone, but especially in people with high genetic risk of type 2 diabetes” – summed up the main author of the study Dr. Youngwon Kim.

– These results complement the evidence that the time spent in a sitting position can be a potential tool of intervention to improve health in humans in general, and in particular in people with high risk of type 2 diabetes – commented the results of research by Dr. Damon L.
