IMWM issued meteorological warnings. Level 2 alerts are in effect in parts of the country for heavy snowfall. Strong winds and icy surfaces are also expected at night.

Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued second- and first-degree meteorological warnings on a three-degree, increasing scale.

Second degree IMWM warnings – heavy snowfall

Second degree alerts for heavy snowfall have been issued in the following voivodeships:

  • Lesser Polandin the following counties: Tatra, Nowy Targ, Sucha, Wadowice, Limanowski, Nowy Sącz, Gorlice;
  • Silesianin the following counties: Żywiec, Bielsko, Bielsko-BiałaCieszyn.

Snowfall is forecast, in periods of moderate or heavy intensity, causing an increase in snow cover by 20-30 centimeters, and locally by 40 cm.

The warnings will expire at 8 a.m. on Monday.

First degree IMWM warnings – heavy snowfall

IMWM also issued first-degree warnings of heavy snowfall for the following voivodeships:

  • Lower Silesiafor southern counties, where alarms will be valid until 4 p.m. on Sunday;
  • Silesianexcluding poviats covered by second-degree warnings, where the warnings will expire at 8 p.m. on Sunday;
  • Podkarpackiefor southern and western counties, where alarms will be valid until 8 on Sunday;
  • Lesser Polandexcluding poviats covered by second-degree warnings, where the warnings will expire at 8 p.m. on Sunday;
  • Świętokrzyskieexcept for poviats located on the eastern edge, where alarms will be valid until 20 on Sunday.

Up to 10-20 cm of snow may fall in the above regions.

First degree IMWM warnings – icing

First degree anti-icing alerts have been issued in the following voivodeships:

  • West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin northern counties;
  • Pomeranian;
  • Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeshipin northern counties.

It is forecast that wet road surfaces and sidewalks will freeze after rainfall, sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The minimum temperature will be from -2 to 1 degree Celsius, the minimum temperature at the ground will drop to about -3 degrees Celsius.

The alarms will be in force until 9 on Sunday.

IMWM first degree warnings – strong wind

Yellow alerts for strong winds apply in the following voivodeships:

  • West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin northern and eastern counties;
  • Pomeranianin the north of the voivodeship;
  • Warmian-Masurian Voivodeshipin western counties.

Strong winds with an average speed of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts of up to 70 km/h, are forecast to occur from the north-west and north. In Western Pomerania, the alarms will be valid until 12 on Sunday, and in other regions – until 17 on the same day.

First degree IMWM warnings – snowstorms/blizzards

First degree alerts for snowstorms/blizzards have been issued in the following voivodeships:

  • Lower Silesiain southern counties;
  • Silesian;
  • Lesser Poland;
  • Podkarpackiein southern counties;
  • Świętokrzyskieoutside eastern counties.

Blizzards and snowstorms are forecast, caused by snowfall and wind with an average speed of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts of 60 to 70 km/h.

Alarms in Lower Silesia and Podkarpacie will be valid until 8 p.m. on Sunday, and in Silesia, Małopolska and the Świętokrzyskie region – until 10 on Sunday.

What is the second degree IMWM meteorological warning?

The second level warning predicts the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena causing significant material losses and a threat to health and life. Dangerous phenomena or the effects of their occurrence significantly limit business activity. Expect disruptions to your daily functioning. Great caution is recommended, it is necessary to monitor the weather forecasts and developments. Follow all recommendations issued by emergency services in the event of an emergency. Adjust your plans to weather conditions.
