Cyclone Fengal was approaching the coast between Puducherry and Chennai on Saturday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department said. Experts explained that associated rainfall zones have already hung over the land, causing heavy rains, and winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour are expected in the region.
Dangerous rainfall
The cyclone caused the first traffic difficulties. Heavy rains caused flooding of the Chennai International Airport and all flights were suspended until Sunday morning. Railway operator Southern Railway suspended some services from Chennai and some trains were diverted to other routes. In Puducherry, local authorities sent an SMS alert to about 1.2 million people warning of severe weather.
Fengal moved along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on Saturday, causing heavy rainfall. There were floods in parts of the country. State services, including the navy, carried out activities aimed at helping the injured, and government and non-government agencies began distributing aid.
