A couple from India argued for three years over the naming of their child. The spouses were close to divorce because of this. Ultimately, according to media reports, they agreed to the name chosen for their son by the court.
A couple from the southern state of Karnataka India had an argument over her son's name shortly after he was born in 2021. The mother and her child planned to spend a few weeks after giving birth at their parents' home. “Women in India often move to their parents' house after the birth of a child to rest and recover,” writes the BBC.
A three-year dispute over the son's name
When the 21-year-old mother refused to give her son the name his father had chosen for him, the man decided not to come for his wife and newborn. According to the prosecutor's office, the woman chose the name Adi for the boy, consisting of the first letter of her name and part of her husband's name. The Times of India daily wrote this week that the name is not registered on the current lists. As added, the father wanted to name the child Śani – in honor of the Hindu god.
The mother's lawyer admitted in an interview with the BBC that the dispute over the name escalated to such an extent that the woman wanted a divorce. – She needed money to maintain and run the house – he explained, pointing out that in order to receive financial support from her husband, the woman went to court. At one point, the case was taken up by the department that resolved disputes through mediation.
The court chose a name for the baby
Despite numerous suggestions from the judges, the couple remained adamant about their choices for a long time. Ultimately, the spouses agreed on the name chosen by the court. The child was named Aryavardhana, which means “noble”, said prosecutor Hunsur Sowmya, quoted by the British broadcaster. According to local media, the couple buried the hatchet and publicly reconciled.
