Janów Podlaski. The new head of the stud wants to rebuild the tarnished reputation of this place

This year's Arabian horse's days are not threatened, and the most important challenge – after years of tarnished reputation – is the reconstruction of pure -blooded horses of Arabian horses and increasing its importance in world markets. This is what Weronika Sosnowska says, the current main breeder, who was the president of the stud in Janów Podlaski (Lublin).

On Monday (March 31), the meeting of partners of the company “Stud of Koni Janów Podlaski” entrusted the duties of the President of the Stud Weronica Sosnowska, the current main breeder. She took over new duties on Tuesday.

Sosnowska is the ninth president of the Janów stud since the dismissal of Marek Trela ​​in 2016. In her opinion, what has happened over the last eight years “has been very damaged the reputation of the stud”, the achievements of many breeders have been wasted, and female lines of Arabian horses – impoverished.

“Any changes are not served by either animal breeding or crew,” she said for the president.

In her opinion, the stud can be rebuilt, but for this you need time, peace and stability.

She admitted that she valued Marek Trela, and perceives cooperation with him as “great honor and a huge opportunity to expand horizons.”

The most important challenge – reconstruction of pure -blooded horse breeding

In the near future – she added – she intends to focus on organizing the Arab Horse Days (they will take place on August 8-10), including the Pride of Poland auction, Summer Sale and the 47th National Blood Arabian Horse Show.

– This is one of the most important points in the calendar of Pure Blood Horse Lovers – she noted.

– The most important challenge for the Janów Podlaski Horse Stud is the reconstruction of the Pure Arabian Horse Breeding and increasing its importance in world markets, because in recent years the reputation of Janów Podlasie and the quality of the bred horses have dropped significantly – said Sosnowska.

Many very valuable horses were sold, after which no offspring remained

According to her, the challenge when choosing horses for auction is to preserve the most valuable lines and gene pool, and on the other – preparing an offer attractive to customers.

– From year to year it is getting more and more difficult, especially for Janów, who in previous years sold many very valuable horses, after which no offspring remained in the stud – she admitted.

Intends to keep the Arabian horse's days at a high level

She stated that the organization of Arabian Horse Days was not threatened.

“We will try to prepare a high level auction,” she said.

She added that she was going to keep the party at the same level as last year. At the same time, she admitted that she was observing the growing interest in this year's auction.

“Breeders from abroad already ask me what the preparations look like and when we present a list of horses,” she said.

There are about 400 horses and 680 cows in the stud

An important event for the entire industry – she assessed – is also the Congress of the European Arabian Horse Organization (Ecaho), which will take place on April 26-28 in Warsaw. The Janów stud intends to present foals and this year's income on it.

Sosnowska announced that there are about 400 horses and 680 cows in the stud.

– Last year, we managed to sell virtually as many horses as it was born, so the state was not enlarged. This year, sales of horses are also going well, we export a lot of horses – she said.

Preliminary report for 2024: about PLN 4 million loss

In her opinion, the financial condition of the horse farm “is poor”. The financial statements for 2024 have not yet been approved, but the preliminary report shows a loss of approx. PLN 4 million. She added that on Tuesday she had the first meetings with the managers of individual departments in the stud to “identify needs and plan further actions.”

Intends to continue the projects planned by its predecessor, such as construction photovoltaic panels and construction of a biogas plant. The most advanced are preparations for investment in solar farm, a preliminary energy audit project was created and the process of arrangements has been completed.

– On the other hand, in the case of biogas plants you still need analyzes regarding the availability of raw material and biogas plant performance – she pointed out.

The oldest State Horse Stud in Poland

Sosnowska has been the main breeder at the Janów stud for nearly a year. Earlier she worked, among others at the studs in Kurozwęki and Michałów. She got to know breeding in Belgium, the United States and Cathar. She graduated from the zootechnics at the University of Agriculture Hugo Kołłątaj in Krakow and managerial studies at the University of Economics in Krakow. As the president of the stud, she replaced Leszek Świętochowski, who managed her from February 2024.

The Stud in Janów Podlaski is the oldest state horse stud in Poland. Every year in August, crowds of breeders and lovers of Pure Blood Arabian horses attract thanks to two events – the Polish National Arabian Horse Show, which has been organized since 1979, and Arab horse auctions Pride of Poland (under this name since 2001). The first auction took place in 1970.
