John Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, his family said in a statement released by the actor's manager, Alan Somers, on Sunday. The cause of death was not provided in the statement.

John David Ashton was born on February 22, 1948 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Edward Richard Ashton, Sr. and Eva May Ashton. He was raised in Enfield, Connecticut, where he graduated from Enfield High School. After attending Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio for two years, he transferred to the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelor's degree in theater arts.
Ashton's film debut took place in 1973 – he appeared in the film “The Psychopath”. Over more than five decades of acting, he has appeared in dozens of productions, including films such as “An Eye for an Eye”, “Instinct” and “Before Midnight”, as well as the series “Columbo”, “Sergeant Anderson” and “Starsky and “Hutch.” One of his most famous roles was the role of Sergeant John Taggart in “Beverly Hills Cop” starring Eddie Murphy. The actor appeared in all films in the series.
