Every parent remembers the moment when their child fell asleep on their hands for the first time. When we were aware that they were calmed down by the beating of our heart and our warmth. Unfortunately, there are children who had no chance to be in the arms of their parents. Fortunately, there is a Kangaroo ambulance.

Hania is only two months old. Dawid and Filip – after a month. Although they don't have a dad next to them, this is someone who hugs them to heart.

– Today I have it for the first time, but I think we are making friends – says Julia Seidel, a volunteer of the Kangaroo ambulance, a member of the Student Scientific Circle of Neonatology of the Medical University of Warsaw.

Parents of these children cannot deal with them for various reasons. – These are sometimes very difficult, complicated social situations and children are waiting for us to transfer to foster families – says Dr. Urszula Majewska, a neonatologist from the Clinical Hospital of Anna Mazowiecka in Warsaw.

Sometimes it takes up to several weeks. As the neonatologist Urszula Majewska points out, there were usually two, three such children during the year. Recently – in two months – there were several of them.

– Every child after delivery, absolutely everyone needs from their parent or guardian, in various life situations, the same. He needs to be hugged, touched, he needs to feel the smell of the skin, its smell – indicates Anna Matysiak, a children's physiotherapist, a speech therapist from the Clinical Hospital of Anna Mazowiecka in Warsaw.

What requirements must be met by a volunteer of the Kangaroo ambulance?

When this parent or guardian is missing, they enter – volunteers from the Kangaroo ambulance, which was created at the Neonatology and Intensive Care Clinic of the Newborn at the Hospital at Karowa Street in Warsaw.

– Here my four pregnancies, threatened, were saved, so I have great gratitude and I want to give something from each other – says Elżbieta Brzozowska, a volunteer of the Kangaroo ambulance from the “Koalition for Przedszieniak” Foundation.

Volunteers are recruited by the “Coalition for Przedszczniak” Foundation. A certificate of no criminal record and confirmation that you are not on the list of sex offenders are necessary. You can not have absolutely no symptoms of colds or herpes and you need to have short, unpainted nails. This is for better disinfection. Students from the Neonatology Circle are a great support of volunteering.

– I try not to sing. But I come depending on the needs of the baby, whether you need to feed him or just rewind – says Aleksandra Szredzka, a volunteer of Kangaroo ambulance, a member of the Student Scientific Circle of Neonatology of the Medical University of Warsaw.

What started at Karowa can develop on a large scale. The dream of “Coalition for a premature baby” is to create a network of Kangaroo. – If we have this base, then we will be able to help other hospitals in other cities – indicates Elżbieta Brzozowska.

– We often see how children just fall asleep in their hands and I would like them to be able to use it as much as possible. Oh, someone even smiles here – notes Julia Seidel.
