Czech police detained a young Pole suspected of setting fire to a sports hall in Karvina near the border with Poland. According to the services, the man allegedly threw a firecracker into the hall where the skate park was located. The fire completely destroyed the facility. The damage was initially estimated at almost one million zlotys.

On Monday morning, six fire brigades extinguished the fire in the sports hall in Karvina – informed the fire brigade of the Moravian-Silesian region. The Czech fire brigade reported that “thick, black smoke was visible from a distance.”

“Due to the risk of collapse of the roof structure, which was destroyed as a result of the fire, the intervention was carried out only from the outside of the hall. Firefighters managed to locate the fire within thirty minutes, and it took another hour to extinguish it,” described the Czech fire brigade.

Despite the efficient action of the fire brigade, the building could not be saved – it burned completely. The damage was initially estimated at 5.8 million crowns (almost PLN 1 million).

The incident took place in the morning in Karvina, near the border with Poland. According to information provided by the police, the young Pole was to throw a firecracker into the building where the local skate park was located, which started a fire. The police detained the Pole. The officers continued their procedural activities until late in the evening.

Criminal proceedings concern the suspicion of committing a crime of causing a general threat as a result of negligence and destruction of other people's property.
