Konotopie. He designed and found a location for the 55-meter statue of the Mother of God. “This place is modified”

Płowież is a small village with an 800-year history located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, about ten kilometers away from Jabłonów Pomorskie. It is here that for twenty -five years with his family a respected sculptor Adam Jakub Matejkowski. It was he who received from the Karkosik marriage an order to design a 55-meter sculpture with the basis of the Merciful Mother of God in Konotopia.

– In September 2023, Professor Mirosław Krajewski, my friend, contacted me, and asked if I would like to design the Mother of God for Roman Karkosik. Thank you for thinking about me. I agreed without hesitation, the more that I am a believer. I first made a drawing project with which I went to Mr. Karkosik. We communicated very quickly – says Adam Jakub Matejkowski.

He got freedom of action from marriage. This is his original project, for which he had to prepare properly.

– Case is out of the question here, a small mistake increases many times. Spatial thinking is needed to imagine the scale of size and predict everything. It must be done solidly. I was in Świebodzin, where the hill was saturated with 17-meters. The hill, unfortunately, sits down, the sculpture breaks. I went there, talked to people who worked and shared their experience selflessly, thank them for this – says Adam Jakub Matejkowski.

– Thinking about the Mother of God, it was important for me to revive her in some way, “remove from the pedestal”. There are so many images of the Mother of God that it is difficult not to resist different temptations. Before designing, I studied her various images, with particular emphasis on large implementation. When I carved the model in clay, I invited to cooperate with two of my former sculptors Krzysztof Skóra and Marek Pursa. Both like me graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and have large projects in their achievements. I was convinced that one head for such implementation was not enough. In this way, a sculpture was created, which is essentially very simple, but also wise – emphasizes the sculptor.

Speaking of a “photo from a pedestal”, the artist from Płądża points to the inclined head of the Mother of God and the desire to catch eye contact with man. However, this is not the end.

– Merciful Mother of God has slightly open hands. He pulls them out to show that he wants to catch contact with man. He does not cover, but invites to himself. This enormous power that is here flows from her hands with favors. This thought, which is contained in this figure, arose when I once saw the strength of young people and their faith on the pilgrimage. If this sculpture is to serve people, and it has been designed with this thought, it is to carry something instead of frightening with its enormity. This enormity is to wake us up internally, not terrifying us – notes Adam Jakub Matejkowski.

The figure of Our Lady of Merciful in Konotopia will be made entirely of high quality concrete. Work is currently underway to perform the basis. In total, the whole is to count 55 meters and will be one of the highest buildings of this type in the world, next to the monument to Jesus with Rio de Janeiro (38.5 meters) and the monument to Jesus in Świebodzin (52.5 meters).

The figure will stand right next to the national road number 10, on a hill near the Marian shrine in Konotopia. As it turns out, this place is not accidental.

– This place is modified. Looking for him, I went to different places. At the beginning there was a proposal that it would be a plot at a bend at the lake. When I imagined this huge sculpture and people, I found that it was not. I changed my perspective. Once upon a time I was driving a car and looked from Kikoł, where she would be best. I found this place. As if waiting for us. I go, look and see that there are buildings. Only who will sell it. At home it was written that 4.5 hectares of land for sale with buildings. I returned to your Karkosików, Mr. Roman told his wife to go to see this place. She went and said it was a good location. Oh, the whole story. Right next to it is a sanctuary – recalls the sculptor.

Matejkowski does not hide that the possibility of taking part in such a large undertaking is something “unimaginable” for him. – This is a great satisfaction, but at the same time I realize that this is not a coincidence, and that my need to repay the Mother of God has worked. A lot of people show a lot of heart. Even recently I heard that highlanders will do cheaper because it is the Mother of God. I felt more pleasant. This atmosphere should build this undertaking – the artist ends.

The monument is to be erected in August 2026. There will be an accompanying infrastructure nearby, among others with many parking spaces and access roads.
