“I want you to get to know me for real. I am gay. For years I hid it from the world – from you, from the media, and sometimes even from myself,” Andrzej Stękała wrote in a post published on January 1 on social media. He confessed that he had been in a relationship since 2016, but his partner died in November.

Małysz talks about Stękała's coming out. “I knew it”

Andrzej Stękała is trying to rebuild his form. He last won World Cup points in 2022. He is supported by his loved ones, friends from the team, rivals from other countries, but he also has support Polish Ski Association.

Adam Ma³ysz admitted that he had known about Stękała's orientation for a long time and had talked to him personally about his relationship. The union also offered him the opportunity to meet with a psychologist to rebuild himself mentally and work through the trauma of the death of a loved one.

– I knew it quite a long time ago, but this is his private matter and there was no reason to speak out or get involved without Andrzej's knowledge. Before this message appeared on social media, I talked to Andrzej. He asked for the union's approval. He knows that we have nothing to do with it, because it is his life and his affairs. Andrzej can still cooperate with the trade union psychologist and I know that he is under his care, they are solving some things – said the president of PZN in an interview with “Przegląd Sportowy Onet”.

According to Małysz, Stękała's coming out may have a positive impact on the coming years of his career, because he has shed a certain burden. He is optimistic about the jumper's future.

– What happened to him recently was a really big blow. I think that what he did with his coming out will also have an impact on his further career. He released some secrets, something that had probably been bothering him for a long time. I can only say that I keep my fingers crossed for him and I would like us to get him back on the hill like he was a few seasons ago, when he could jump at such a high level that he stood on the podium of the most important competitions – said Małysz.

Andrzej Stękała has one podium in the World Cup – in February 2021, he took second place in Zakopane. This season, he took part in the qualifications in Wisła twice, but never advanced to the competition.
