A Polish couple got stuck by a cliff in Madeira, Portugal. They were isolated by the tide. The rescue operation lasted several hours, so the couple had to spend the night in the cave. Ultimately, the Poles were saved and transported to hospital. “The health condition of the rescued people is stable,” said the management of the Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN).

According to the management of the Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN), local services received an alarm signal on Friday evening. Due to the high tide, the Polish couple was isolated on one of the cliffs near the point of Ponta do Pargo, located in the west of the island.

A rescue boat was immediately dispatched, but high waves made reaching the Polish tourists difficult. According to AMN's statement, bringing help to the Poles turned out to be impossible “both by sea and by air.” Ultimately, they had to spend the night in one of the caves near the cliff.

The rescue operation, led by four Portuguese security services, was completed on Saturday morning. The Poles were rescued from under the cliff by a rescue team that arrived by helicopter from the neighboring island of Porto Santo.

“The health condition of the rescued people is stable,” said the AMN management, specifying that before noon they were taken to one of the hospitals in Funchal, the main city of Madeira.
