Thirty-eight people died on Saturday in southeastern Brazil when a bus full of passengers collided with a truck, the fire department said. A tire burst on a bus carrying 45 passengers and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
On Saturday morning, the driver of a bus carrying 45 passengers lost control of the vehicle due to a burst tire and then collided with an oncoming truck loaded with tiles. 38 people died. 13 bus passengers managed to save. Eight people are in hospitals in serious condition. The dead include the bus driver and at least one child.
The accident occurred on a highway near the town of Teofilo Otoni in the state of Minas Gerais. Firefighters said the bus was coming from Sao Paulo and heading to the state of Bahia.
This is the most tragic road accident in Brazil since 2007, according to police data cited by the local press.
According to data from the Brazilian Ministry of Transport, over 10,000 people died this year as a result of road accidents in Brazil.
