In January 2025, the sale of Tesla cars, which is owned by Elon Musk, fell by 38 percent compared to data from last year. According to experts, this is the result of the billionaire's political involvement and his controversial speeches. “If it happened in another company, the boss or president would probably have been released a long time ago,” said Investment Director Nordea Robert Nass in an interview with Norwegian TV2.

January sales of electric cars in Norway Compared to the previous year, it increased by 82.4 percent. In the first month of 2025, 9,343 cars were registered for the first time. Volkswagen and Toyota gained the most, and their results have increased more than three times. In total, cars of these brands constituted over a third of all electricians sales in January.

Decrease in Tesla sales

A year ago, Tesla was the undisputed leader in Norway, and every fifth car sold at that time was the brand. The results for the last month turned out to be bad for Elon Muska. Sales have fallen by more than a thirdand share in the Norwegian market up to just over 7 percent. A year ago, 1109 new Tesla was registered during the first month, and in January 2025 less than 700.

In 2024, almost 129,000 new cars were sold in Norway, of which only every tenth did not only have an electric drive. The most popular brand was Tesla with the participation of 18.9 percent. Volkswagen came second, and Toyota was third. Both brands exceeded a 10 % market share.

The Norwegian branch of Tesla was reluctant to talk about the last results. – We focus on our products. We have very good cars, and we have not been given to comments on the level of sales or the influence of Elon Musk and his behavior – Marit Lade answered PAP from Tesla Norge's communication department.

Musk “discourages customers”

Commentators asked by Norwegian TV2 had no doubt that Tesla was influenced by the character of Elon Musk. The owner of the brand has been involved in supporting extreme right -wing movements in Europe in recent weeks, especially in Germany. Some of his behavior were considered to be Nazi. Robert Nass, investment director at Nordea, in an interview with TV2 spoke about “basic mistakes” in the billionaire's behavior.

– Businessmen should not talk about politics. When you take a specific position, half of the buyers may disagree with you. And discouraging customers is not smart. If this would happen in another company, the boss or president would probably have been released a long time ago – commented Nass for television.

Problems on Tesla websites

The political views and attitude of Elon Musk are not the only factor affecting the growing reluctance of the Norwegians to his cars. According to Thor Oeivind Jensen, a scientist from the University of Bergen, the manufacturer's attitude towards his clients is also important.

– Tesla is located at the top of the list of hated brands run by the Norwegian Motor Association and the Consumer Ombudsman. There were several faults in these cars, and customers reporting with complaints met with arrogance and slow service. We got used to that when something with the car is wrong, the customer is right and the company apologizes. Tesla's behavior is far from the standards we have become accustomed to in Europe – said an economist from Bergen in an interview with TV2.

Norwegian politicians joined the growing dislike of Elon Muska. For the appeal of the Polish minister of sport Sławomir Nitras The leader of the leftist party of SV, Kirsta Bergstoe, answered. In the commentary for PAP she said that she would not buy from Elon Musk neither Tesla or anything else; She would not recommend anyone from a billionaire to anyone.

Ola Elvestuen from the Liberal Party, a former Norwegian minister of climate, and earlier deputy mayor of Oslo responsible for the green transformation, also did not hide his dislike of Tesla.

– I won't buy Muska cars. The decrease in their sale is a reasonable response to what he does in Europe. This is a consequence of Elon Musk supporting right -wing parties or attempts to influence the course and results of the election – the Norwegian parliamentarian decided in an interview with PAP.
