The story from Olsztyn should remind us how important the ability to provide first aid is. Everything happened in the restaurant. At one point, the woman reported that her child was choking. The baby choked. It was losing its breath. An officer from Mrągowo came to help.
A policeman saved the life of a choking girl who was several months old because he knew what to do and, above all, he acted quickly. The officer was on training and during his lunch break in a restaurant he heard a cry for help.
– When I was in the restaurant, I heard a terrified woman screaming: “She's choking.” When I heard this, I knew I had to intervene. I immediately approached these people, they were a woman and a man. They were holding a small child who was choking. They tried to help him, but to no avail. I knew I had to act quickly and decisively. I took the child from these people and started giving first aid. When I picked up the baby, he had trouble breathing and turned pale. While I was helping him, he lost consciousness. Despite this, I did not lose hope and did everything to restore his normal breathing. After a while it happened. The child started breathing – described an operational policeman from Mrągowo.
– I feel great satisfaction that I saved the life of a little man – he concluded.
Sometimes someone's life is in our hands
The police praise the colleague's behavior and point out how important first aid training is in their work.
– This shows how important first aid training is. I'm not just talking about policemen here, but about all of us in general. However, when it comes to police officers, already at the stage of basic training, already in the first contact with the police uniform, in police schools, this training in providing first aid is extremely important. These are skills that are acquired throughout the duration of such training. Then they are recorded and updated during the service – described the deputy commander. Tomasz Markowski from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Olsztyn.

The paramedic who commented on the situation from Olsztyn stated that all the steps were correct and thanks to that the child is alive and well today.
– The highest marks here. No time delay, the action was taken at a low level, i.e. the child was not at a high altitude. It was obvious that the policeman immediately started opening the airways without thinking, because there was no time, said Krzysztof Jurołajć from the emergency medical station in Olsztyn.
Rescuers tell us to remember or learn the basic actions we should take in such situations, because – unfortunately – the ambulance does not always arrive on time and someone's life may end up in our hands.
