Today, we will have the opportunity to see a partial solar eclipse all over Poland. Check where the phenomenon will be best visible and how to properly prepare for it. As Karol Wójcicki, the author of the profile “with the head in the stars”, is “one of the most interesting astronomical phenomena this year”.
On Saturday, around 11.50 Central European time, a partial solar eclipse will begin. In Poland, the maximum phenomenon will take place around 12.28, and the whole will end after 1pm.
“It may not be a spectacle tailored to a total eclipse (we leave it at 2026 in Spain!), But still emotions guaranteed!” – wrote Karol Wójcicki, author of the profile “with the head in the stars”. “Because although this time the moon will only cover a fragment of the sun's shield, even a partial embrace of the sun with the moon deserves our attention,” he added.
Partial solar eclipse
As a Saturday eclipse is a partial eclipse – not only locally in Poland, but globally in the world.
“The moon's orbit is inclined to the earth's orbit by up to 5 degrees – and therefore, although the moon encircle the earth every month, its shadow usually” passes “our planet over the North Pole or at the South Pole” – he explained. “This time, however, this shadow will take place so close to the North pole that the north -eastern Canada and almost all of Europe will be hooked through the so -called partial shade, causing a partial eclipse of different phases. This time, however, there will be no total eclipse” – he added.
Where the conditions for observing the coverage will be the best
In Poland, the best conditions for observing this phenomenon will be in the northwestern part of the country. As Wójcicki wrote, in Świnoujście The moon will cover up to 16.5 percent of the sun's shield.
“The farther to the southeast, the less spectacular – in Warsaw, the cover will be 7.3 percent, and in Rzeszów only 3.6 percent but regardless of the place – it's worth looking up!” – emphasized Karol Wójcicki.
How to safely observe the eclipse
When observing the solar eclipse, you should first of all remember not to look directly at the shield, because it may cause permanent damage to your vision. The best tools for observing this phenomenon are special glasses or sun filters for optical instruments. If you want to view the eclipse through the camera lens, telescope or binoculars, use a special ND5 filter for the lens. In this case, the foil glasses are not enough – sunlight focused by the lenses, gets through the foil and damage the eye.
If we do not have the right eclipse glasses, we can use welding glass with a darkening degree of at least 14 or view them indirectly. Instead of looking directly at the sun's shield, we can affect his image to another surface, for example with a punching card or a colander.
Under no circumstances should you watch the eclipse through sunglasses, CD, smoky glass or X -ray. These tools do not protect our eyes from harmful solar radiation.
Europeans will be able to watch the nearest total eclipse of the sun on August 12, 2026. The phenomenon will be visible from Iceland, Greenland, Portugal and Spain.
