The analysis of X -ray fluorescence confirmed that the dagger found on the Baltic beach is not a modern object. His age is estimated at 2800 years. – We are planning comprehensive interdisciplinary research – said Grzegorz Kurka, director of the Kamień Land History Museum.

The dagger was found on March 30 on the beach in the western part of the Polish Baltic coast. Metal detector was located by explorers from the Association for Schedule of Monuments Saint. Kordula in Kamień Pomorskie Jacek Ukowski and Katarzyna Herdzik. A richly decorated dagger, 24.2 cm long, was in a clay block detached from the cliff to a storm.

Analysis of X -ray fluorescence (XRF), performed by a team of specialists from the MN Conservation Department, confirmed that the dagger is certainly not an item from a few hundred years ago. His age is estimated at 2800 years.

– XRF technique allows you to non -invasively determine the elemental composition of the examined object. This is particularly important for metal monuments, because it provides information about the type of alloy used, as well as about possible admixtures that may indicate the source of the raw material and the methods of its processing. The initial results of the analysis revealed the presence of copper, zinc and other trace elements – explained Grzegorz Kurka, director of the Museum of the History of the Kamień Land.

To conduct subsequent tests, the found object must be formally transferred to the deposit to the Kamien Museum. The decision on this matter will be made by the Provincial Conservator of Monuments.

– We are planning comprehensive interdisciplinary research. We want to do signs of wear and a very accurate three -dimensional image of this dagger – said Kurek. – The ornaments on the dagger are very interesting. Stars, moons, crescents are arranged in a certain order, it can be a calendar. We will look for scientists, an institute who will help you find answers to the questions bothering us today – he added.

Dagger research from the Baltic beach is to give an answer from which the period of this extraordinary object in which the technology was made and where. Director Kurka estimated that a dagger with such high quality metallurgy could have been created in southern Europe. He is preserved in excellent condition. It is not known how he found himself in the Baltic areas.

The director of the Museum of the History of the Kamień Land pointed out that the decorations on the blade and dagger handles may indicate connections with the solar cult and suggest that this object had ritual significance. He could also belong to a rich warrior.
