– Rafał Trzaskowski was our good candidate in 2020, when PiS was in power and the rule of law was at stake. But today the situation has changed. Today it's about safety. And here I have strong documents – said Radosław Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in “Kropka nad i” on TVN24. He referred to his rivalry with the mayor of Warsaw for the nomination from the Civic Coalition to run in next year's presidential elections.
Radosław SikorskiMinister of Foreign Affairs, was asked in “Kropka nad i” on TVN24 about his rivalry with Rafał Trzaskowski about who is to be the presidential candidate for the Civic Coalition. On December 7, the winner of the primary elections will present his program in Silesia.
Sikorski: Rafał has different advantages, I have others
– I think that Rafał Trzaskowski has the right to want to make amends for losing to Andrzej Duda. This is understandable and it is not a matter of better or worse, we are simply different. I believe that Rafał was our good candidate in 2020 when he was in power PIS and it was about the rule of law, Sikorski said.
– But today the situation has changed. Today it's about safety. And here I have strong credentials, but Rafał Trzaskowski may be our good candidate again in the future, he is young – he added.

– I think we are just different. Rafał has different advantages and I have others. And depending on the challenges, the job must be given to the person who is suitable, emphasized the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
– Using a metaphor, if we were visiting Warsaw, if you asked me who would be a better guide, for example, to the Museum of Modern Art, I would say Rafał Trzaskowski, but (if – ed.) to the Polish Army Museum or the Polish History Museum , then I think I would be better – added Sikorski.
Abortion and civil partnerships. What would Sikorski do?
– I believe that we need a candidate and president who will combine liberal sensitivity, for example in economic matters, and conservative sensitivity, associated with a certain conservative temperament – Sikorski continued.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that in a possible second round of the presidential elections, he could attract a wider electorate than Rafał Trzaskowski. – I believe that, for example, in the Polish People's Party (this – editor's note), I have a greater chance of attracting this lecturer. It seems to me that the Confederation appreciated the fact that I supported the exhumation of our compatriots in Volhynia. And my economic liberalism is also appreciated, he argued.
Sikorski was also asked whether, as president, he would sign a law liberalizing abortion law. – (Abortion – ed.) I would sign it by the 12th week – he assured.
Would Sikorski also sign the law on civil partnerships? – Monika Olejnik asked. – Here I wouldn't just sign. If the current crisis continued, I would take a legislative initiative, he said.
The host also asked if he would sign the same-sex marriage law. – I think that there are gradations here, that it is a matter of dignity. People want not only practical benefits, they also want their relationship to be publicly recognized as a fact, so that they feel good with themselves and their partner, Sikorski said. – I believe that today we actually have two degrees of marriage – civil marriage and sacramental marriage. There was once an engagement. For me, civil partnerships are like an engagement, so we should let people choose the form in which they want their relationship to be publicly recognized, he continued.
– I am in favor of civil partnerships, joint tax returns and a public declaration of partnership – said the guest of “Kropka nad i”.
Debate with Trzaskowski. Sikorski: I would bet on her
Sikorski was also asked whether there should be a debate between him and Rafał Trzaskowski.
– I would approach it – he replied, and when asked whether he would like such a possible debate to be public, he noted that “we agreed on the board that it would not be and I agree with that.”
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also talked about a potential presidential candidate from PiS.
He said that if Kaczyński's party fielded “someone brutal, sharp, who does not necessarily respect current conventions”, then the Civic Coalition would “also need a strong player for him”.
– I believe that I, as a boy from Bydgoszcz, can cope better with such brutality (on the part of PiS – ed.), not in salons, but just outside Warsaw – he said.
